TGIFF! Thank goodness it’s Future Friday! Time for another awesome campy look into the future.
Here are two fabulous ’50s dream kitchen videos. The first, General Motors’ “Design for Dreaming,” is a promotional film for the 1956 Motorama. It is a surreal, beatnik-inspired, dance infused vision of the future, and it is a-mazing. If you follow the logic of the video, the oven will teach you tennis, help you dance and make your legs look great in a swimsuit, it will also bake you a fullly frosted birthday cake (complete with lit candles) You’ll be ordering a Mororama before the end of the song. Oh, we didn’t mention the theme song? Check out these great rhymes.
NO NEED FOR THE BRIDE TO FEEL TRAGIC,
THE REST IS PUSH BUTTON MAGIC!
The second clip is a section from film coverage of the Monsanto “House of the Future,” located in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland. They are OBSESSED with plastic. So much so we’re going to take a second look at the family. We don’t remember seeing the mother’s face move in the six minute tape.
I guess the thing we really have to examine is, why aren’t our kitchens like that? The Comedy.com kitchen just has moldy bagels and the faint smell of burnt hair and popcorn. We wish we had the “future!” It seems so awesome!
