Top 10 Vintage-Inspired Sketches From “Mr. Show”

Mr. Show

We’re always on the lookout for funny vintage videos, but occasionally we come across bits and sketches that have been made recently, and still give us the retro giggles. Alice Wrigley, Gal Reporter and Know Your Limits are great examples of throwback hilarity, but for the highest ratio of quality and quantity, we turn to the 90s HBO sketch genius of “Mr. Show with Bob And David.” There are scores of fantastic faux vintage sketches, but here are our favorites.

10. Return of the Curse of the Creature’s Ghost

Bob and David take us back to the 50s for the most convoluted horror movie of all time. “Please everyone! We must know what it is we’re supposed to be afraid of!”

9. The Altered State of Druggachusetts

In 1969, Sid and Marty Krofft created H.R. Pufnstuf, one of the most imaginative kids shows of all time. In 1997, Bob and David recreated it, this time saying what we were all thinking. Those guys were WASTED!

8. Vaunnies Mustardayonnaise

“Mr. Show” advertises their ridiculous mayo/mustard combo the same way Macintosh did in their 1984 Superbowl ad.

7. Yeah Yeah Yeah

This show is so genius, even their transitions are awesome. Watch the boys pull a “Hard Day’s Night” while trying to escape some very angry women’s lib ladies.

6. Money Warning- Josh Fenderman

All we can say about this sketch is that it is “pumpkinninny!” Well, that and the looped ’80s footage of that ridiculous dance is hysterical.

5. Jack Webber

Politician Jack Webber made some regrettable statements back in the red scare of the  1950s. “Here’s a simple test, to see if your child is really a costumed dwarf…”

4. The Limits of Science

The world’s oldest educational film! This sketch isn’t just a throwback, it is super retro! A ’70s style filmstrip written in the dark ages = awesome.

3. Philouza

Amadeus was a great film. John Philip Sousa was a composer for  marching bands. Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are geniuses for seeing the comic opportunity in blending the two!

2. The Story of Everest

Classic. A must watch.

1. Megaphone Crooners

This is sketch that inspired this whole darn list. Dickie Crickets and Kid Jersey sing old timey songs about new-fangled inventions. “Electric Sports Bra” may be one of our favorite song openings of all time. “Thank you!”
